Exciting New Academies at Hugh Sutherland School

In a bold move to enhance student engagement and educational depth, Hugh Sutherland School (HSS) in Carstairs is set to introduce three new academies starting this fall. Approved by the Chinook’s Edge School Board, these academies will focus on hockey, dance/cheer, and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math). Unlike traditional elective courses, these academies promise to offer students a more immersive learning experience tailored to their individual interests and aspirations.

A Shift Towards Specialized Learning

The decision to launch these academies reflects HSS’s commitment to providing students with hands-on opportunities that extend beyond the traditional classroom environment. By delving deeply into specific fields like sports, performing arts, and interdisciplinary STEAM subjects, students can expect to gain valuable skills and insights that will prepare them for future challenges.

Innovation in Curriculum: Design Thinking for Innovation

Alongside the new academies, the board has also approved a locally developed course titled "Design Thinking for Innovation." This course, available for Grades 10 through 12, aims to foster creative problem-solving abilities among students. It represents Chinook’s Edge’s proactive approach to equipping students with the skills necessary to thrive in a rapidly evolving global landscape.

Enhanced Safety Measures: Implementation of Hour Zero

Looking forward to the 2024-25 school year, Chinook’s Edge is prioritizing safety with the implementation of Hour Zero, an emergency response system tailored for schools. This initiative includes comprehensive training and support for staff, ensuring that the entire school community is well-prepared to handle emergency situations effectively. Aligning its protocols with those used by emergency responders further enhances safety measures across division facilities.

Leadership and Governance: Trustees Elect New Officers

During its annual organizational meeting, the board also appointed new leadership roles. Holly Bilton was re-elected as Chair, with De Anne Hutchison and Melissa Copley elected as first and second Vice-Chairs, respectively. This reshuffling of roles ensures continuity and effective governance as the board prepares to tackle the challenges and opportunities ahead.
