Revitalizing 52nd Street: A Milestone in Olds

Residents of Olds, Alberta, are celebrating a long-awaited achievement this summer as the extensive renovation project on 52nd Street reaches its completion. The final paving of three blocks along this vital thoroughfare took place on July 5th, marking the culmination of nearly a year-long endeavor.

A Transformational Project

Initiated with a budget of $2.5 million, the project was launched last summer under the stewardship of Ruby Rock Asphalt Works Ltd. The primary objectives were twofold: to replace aging underground sewer and water lines, estimated to be between 70 to 80 years old, and to modernize the streetscape with essential infrastructure upgrades.

Phases of Progress

The renovation work progressed in phases, beginning with the replacement of the aging sewer and water lines. This critical step, completed last fall, was followed by the initial paving of the street to restore functionality and safety to the area. Throughout the spring months, the installation of new sidewalks, curb, and gutter further enhanced the streetscape, ensuring both pedestrian safety and aesthetic appeal.

Preparing for the Final Touch

As the project entered its final stages in late June, meticulous preparations were made for the application of the top lift of asphalt. Workers focused on milling asphalt around manholes and tie-ins, ensuring that the final layer would not only be visually appealing but also durable enough to withstand the rigors of everyday use.

Community Impact and Future Prospects

The completion of the 52nd Street renovation project represents more than just improved infrastructure; it signifies a significant enhancement in the quality of life for Olds residents. With upgraded amenities and a renewed streetscape, the community can look forward to safer, more accessible pedestrian pathways and smoother traffic flow for years to come.
