Young Rodeo Star Heads to Nationals
In a thrilling turn of events, local talent Rance Coates, aged just 15, has secured a spot in the upcoming National High School Rodeo finals. Partnered with Steele Duncan of Athabasca, Rance made an impressive debut in his rookie year at high school, showcasing remarkable skill and determination.
Journey to the Finals
Rance's journey to the Nationals was anything but straightforward. From initially ranking 12th in his district and 34th overall, he surged through the ranks during the Alberta High School Finals Rodeo in Stettler. By Championship Sunday, Rance had climbed to an impressive second place as a header, setting the stage for his qualification alongside Steele Duncan.
The Road to Success
Reflecting on his achievement, Rance humbly attributes his success to consistent practice. "Just practice pays off," he remarked, emphasizing the dedication required to excel in competitive rodeo. This isn't Rance's first taste of victory either, having been crowned the Canadian champion junior all-around cowboy at the 2023 Canadian High School Finals.
Looking Ahead
As the National High School Rodeo finals loom in Wyoming this July, Rance remains unfazed by the pressure. When asked about the intimidating prospect of competing against the best of the best, he simply shrugged it off, describing it as "just another rodeo." His enthusiasm for the sport is palpable, eagerly anticipating the thrill of competitive camaraderie and challenging rides.
A Supportive Network
Behind every successful athlete stands a supportive family, and Rance is no exception. His mother, Ashley Coates, beams with pride at her son's accomplishments and acknowledges the competitive edge that international participants will bring to the finals. Despite the inherent risks in rodeo events, particularly roughstock disciplines like saddle bronc and bull riding, Ashley remains optimistic about Rance's safety, citing his diligent training regimen as a mitigating factor.
