Innovative Wildfire Detection Technology Showcased in Olds
An Edmonton-based tech startup is making waves with its cutting-edge wildfire detection system. Nu Terra Labs, a company specializing in early wildfire detection, recently had the opportunity to pitch its FireSafe system during the DiscoveryLab@AgSmart event held at the Werklund Agriculture & Technology Centre in Olds.
What is FireSafe?
Nu Terra Labs' FireSafe system leverages artificial intelligence (AI) and drone technology to predict and detect wildfires before they can cause extensive damage. Co-founder and CEO, Nafaa Haddou, presented the system to an audience of around 120 attendees, with many more tuning in online from across the globe. Haddou shared that Nu Terra Labs is currently collaborating with the City of Edmonton on a pilot project in the city's river valley and is also coordinating a similar project with the town of Invermere, B.C., slated for next spring.
The Inspiration Behind the Technology
Haddou, along with his co-founder, has over a decade of experience in the information technology sector. The inspiration for developing FireSafe stemmed from the devastating wildfires that have ravaged communities, notably the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfire. As Haddou pitched the technology, a wildfire in Jasper continued to rage out of control, underscoring the urgent need for innovative solutions like FireSafe.
How It Works
FireSafe gathers data that is then fed into a centralized command system, providing a 24/7 monitoring hub. This hub not only assesses ongoing situations but also alerts first responders and nearby communities in the event of a fire. The business model behind FireSafe is service-oriented, allowing communities to rent units during fire season and redistribute them to other areas during off-seasons, helping to manage costs effectively.
Addressing Concerns and Competition
Haddou emphasized that while the FireSafe system is designed to detect and locate wildfires, the actual response to fires is managed by Alberta Wildfire Management. He acknowledged that the risk of false positives exists but highlighted the AI’s ability to learn and improve over time, reducing such occurrences as the system becomes more attuned to specific regions.
When questioned about the competition, Haddou confidently stated that FireSafe stands out due to its origins in the agricultural sector. The technology was initially developed for plant disease detection, giving it a unique edge in vegetation profiling, which is crucial for accurately assessing wildfire risks.
Looking Ahead
As wildfire risks continue to rise with climate change, the need for advanced detection and prevention systems is more critical than ever. Nu Terra Labs’ FireSafe system represents a promising step forward in safeguarding communities from the destructive power of wildfires.
