$15,000 Raised in Sundre to Help Youth Access Sports
In Sundre, the annual Play 4 Sundre Kidz golf tournament has once again proven to be a resounding success. Despite a slight decrease in the number of donated items, this fundraiser managed to pull in approximately $15,000, all aimed at helping remove financial barriers for youth wanting to participate in sports.
A Day on the Green
On July 20, the Coyote Creek Golf & RV Resort was bustling with activity as 144 golfers, divided into 36 teams of four, took to the course. Nicky Vardas, the event organizer, noted that while one team had to withdraw last minute due to work commitments, the turnout was still impressive. "It was super, super hot, but we all survived," Vardas said. "I think everybody had a good time. It’s always just a fun tournament."
Community Contributions
Local businesses and community members generously donated around two dozen items for the event, a bit fewer than previous years, but still significantly impactful. Among the standout donations was a large, custom-made fire pit from Dale Aldrich and four pressure washers from Marc Gamelin. These items helped drive the fundraising total to the impressive $15,000 mark.
A History of Support
Since its inception in 2017, the Play 4 Sundre Kidz golf tournament has been dedicated to supporting youth in the community by making sports accessible to all, regardless of their financial situation. The annual event has grown in popularity and impact, consistently drawing large crowds and substantial donations.
A Missed Repeat
Last year’s event was highlighted by a thrilling moment when a participant sank a hole-in-one, winning a $10,000 prize. This year, however, luck wasn’t quite as generous, and no such feat was repeated. Nonetheless, the spirit of camaraderie and support remained high throughout the day.
Looking Ahead
Organizing an event of this scale requires a lot of effort, but for Vardas and her team, it’s always worth it. "It’s worth it," Vardas affirmed, reflecting on the event’s success. After the tournament, she looked forward to enjoying a well-deserved summer break with her family.
The funds raised from this year’s event will go a long way in helping local youth access sports, ensuring that financial constraints do not stand in the way of their participation. The community’s continued support and generosity play a crucial role in the tournament’s ongoing success and its mission to uplift young athletes in Sundre.
