Olds Aquatic Centre Set for Final Renovations Amid Major Energy Efficiency Overhaul
The Olds Aquatic Centre is gearing up for a temporary closure from September 2 to 22 to complete the final phase of an extensive $2.7 million renovation project. These renovations, which began last year, are part of a significant effort to enhance the facility’s energy efficiency, ensuring it remains a vital community resource for years to come.
A Major Upgrade with Long-Term Benefits
The project is largely funded by a $2.2 million federal Green and Inclusive Community Buildings grant, with the Town of Olds and Mountain View County contributing $426,341 and $127,350, respectively. The renovations, which have been underway since last summer, aim to extend the life of the Aquatic Centre by another two decades.
Some of the key improvements include the installation of high-efficiency boilers, upgraded air handling units to boost ventilation, and new hot water plumbing systems. The renovation also includes the completion of the roof and the addition of new south-facing windows along the deck.
Significant Environmental Impact
These upgrades are not just about keeping the facility operational—they’re set to make a substantial environmental impact as well. The enhancements are expected to slash the centre's energy consumption by an impressive 63.4%, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 432 tonnes annually.
During the scheduled closure, town staff will also be taking the opportunity to perform a deep clean of the entire facility, including filter cleaning and semi-annual maintenance on the water slide.
A Community Asset
The Olds Aquatic Centre holds a special place in the heart of the community, providing essential recreational programming and serving as a safe, accessible space for families. Mayor Judy Dahl emphasized the importance of these renovations, noting that they represent a significant investment in the future of Olds.
“By enhancing the energy efficiency and extending the life of this essential community facility, we are reducing our environmental impact and ensuring that families in Olds continue to have a safe, modern space for recreation and wellness for many years to come,” Dahl said.
As the town prepares to wrap up this major project, the community can look forward to a revitalized aquatic centre that will serve as a hub for recreation and wellness, all while contributing to a greener, more sustainable future.
