Olds Gun & Antique Show: A Growing Tradition
The Olds Gun & Antique Show has seen a remarkable rise in popularity over the past decade. What started as a small event with just over 100 tables has now expanded to host 250 tables, a testament to the growing interest in both firearms and antiques. According to show manager Linda Toews, this surge in popularity has even prompted organizers to host the event twice a year, a significant change from its initial annual schedule.
“The first one we had was modest, but now it’s grown tremendously,” said Toews. The latest edition, held on August 10-11, underscored just how much the event has evolved. With the increasing demand, some have even suggested adding a third show each year. However, Toews pointed out the challenges this would present, especially around the busy Christmas season.
The show has always featured a mix of guns and antiques, a combination that seems to resonate well with attendees. “People who collect one often find themselves interested in the other,” Toews explained. Over the years, the proportion of antiques at the show has grown, now making up about 30% of the exhibits, compared to just 10% in its inaugural year.
Organizing an event of this scale is no small feat, especially with a committee of just four members. Yet, Toews emphasized that the system they've developed over the years helps streamline the process. The show also benefits from the support of volunteers from local nonprofits and schools, who assist with various tasks in exchange for donations. Their contributions are crucial, from managing security to handling entry fees.
The Olds Gun & Antique Show has not only become a cherished tradition but also a significant community event, supporting local organizations while offering a unique blend of history and collectibles for enthusiasts. As the show continues to grow, it remains a highlight for both the town of Olds and the collectors who travel from near and far to attend.
