Tragic End to Hiker’s Search in Nordegg Area

In a somber update from the Rocky Mountain House RCMP, the search for a missing hiker in the Nordegg region has ended in tragedy. The hiker, a 55-year-old man, was found deceased after a prolonged search effort that spanned three days.

Search Efforts

The hiker had been reported overdue on Monday, August 5, sparking an extensive search operation in the rugged terrain near Abraham Lake, close to Nordegg. The initial clue came when the hiker’s vehicle was discovered at the Coral Creek staging area. This discovery prompted an immediate response from the Rocky Mountain House RCMP, who then coordinated with various local search and rescue teams.

On Tuesday, August 6, the search operation commenced in earnest. Rocky Mountain House RCMP, alongside the Rocky Mountain House Search and Rescue Society and Kananaskis Emergency Services, began a thorough search of the area. Their efforts were complemented by volunteers from the Sundre Search and Rescue Society. The challenging terrain, characterized by its remote and mountainous nature, made the search particularly difficult.

Discovery of the Deceased

After a relentless search effort, the missing hiker was tragically found deceased on Thursday, August 8. Search and rescue volunteers, aided by a helicopter crew, located the hiker in the Coral Creek area, approximately 12 kilometers from where his vehicle had been parked.

The body was subsequently transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for further examination. Preliminary reports indicate that the cause of death does not appear to be suspicious.

Community Response

The Rocky Mountain House RCMP have expressed their deep condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. They also extended their gratitude to the volunteers who played a crucial role in the search. The dedication and professionalism of the Alberta Search and Rescue volunteers have been recognized and appreciated.

This incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of outdoor adventures and the importance of preparedness when exploring remote areas. The community’s collective efforts underscore the vital role that search and rescue teams play in ensuring the safety of those who venture into the wilderness.
