Alberta Roads See Nearly 2,000 Traffic Violations Over Labour Day Weekend
Over the Labour Day weekend, Alberta's roads saw heightened traffic enforcement by the RCMP, resulting in nearly 2,000 traffic violations across the province. Between August 30 and September 2, Alberta RCMP officers were on high alert, focusing on traffic safety to ensure drivers reached their destinations without incident.
Surge in Traffic Violations
During this period, a total of 1,982 tickets were issued for various infractions. Among these, speeding was the most common offense, with 990 tickets handed out to drivers who exceeded the speed limit. Additionally, 35 motorists were cited for distracted driving, and 55 were fined for not wearing a seatbelt.
However, the most alarming statistic was the number of impaired drivers. Over the course of the weekend, 92 individuals were removed from the roads due to impairment by drugs or alcohol.
A Clear Message from Law Enforcement
The Alberta RCMP emphasized the importance of safe driving practices, particularly during long weekends, which often see an uptick in road incidents. "There is no reason to get behind the wheel if you are impaired," the RCMP stated, highlighting that most traffic-related tragedies can be prevented with responsible driving.
Sgt. Darrin Turnbull of Alberta RCMP Traffic underscored the message, stating, “We are reminded every long weekend of the dangers on the road. We want everyone to get home safely. Avoiding distracted and impaired driving goes a long way to making that happen.”
Tips for Safe Travel
The police also offered practical advice to motorists: allow extra time for travel and consider postponing trips if road conditions are poor. Taking these precautions can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and help ensure a safe journey for everyone on the road.
By staying vigilant and making thoughtful choices, we can all contribute to safer roads in Alberta.
